Literal calculus encompasses many mathematical equations and inequalities. It is sometimes difficult to find your way around. However, it is advisable to master the details of all these calculations. Indeed, these are the basis of mathematical calculations at a higher level. Moreover, this calculation is performed with at least one number whose value is unknown. Furthermore, this number is symbolized by a letter, often x or y, hence the term “literal calculation”, which means “calculation with letters”. The student in the fifth grade should be able to use the properties of this calculation well. He must also have all the necessary materials to solve the problems. You will develop new skills with this chapter. Stay focused and read the statement carefully before you begin.
The form of the problem is often called the literal expression or the algebraic expression.
D.S : literal calculation
Exercise #1:
(4 pts)
Reduce the following expressions:
A = 3a7 B=10 + 3x – 5 – 4x
C = -15 + 7a +3 -5a D = 4y – 4 + x + 6 – 5y – 7x
Exercise 2:
(2 pts)
Translate the following sentences into algebraic expressions:
The product of x and 3 .
The sum of 6 and double x .
The product of 6 and the sum of x and 3 .
Exercise #3:
(8 pts)
Expand and reduce the following expressions:
A= 2(a + 3) B=5(2 – y) C = 4y + 3(2 – y)
D= (x – 4)x E=10 + 3(x – 5) F =5 + 3t + 4(2-t)
Exercise #4:
(4 pts)
A = 14x +5(4 – 2x )
1- Expand and reduce the expression A.
2- Calculate A for x = 3 and x =0.5.
Exercise #5:
(2 pts )
Let the following equality apply: -7+2x =-3
Riyanne says that 5 verifies this equality, while Iliane says that it is rather 2.
