The control on operating priorities in fifth grade will be of great help to you. Indeed, you will have the opportunity to practice while developing skills. You will progress throughout the year with the operating priorities in math.
When a calculation is composed of several operations, it is absolutely necessary to respect the operating priorities. Otherwise, the result will probably be wrong. Thus, the 4 mathematical operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. When there is only one operation in a calculation, we calculate from the left to the right. However, when there are several operations in a row, there is a certain order to respect. In fact, you should always start with the calculations that are in parentheses, followed by multiplication or division. You will finish with addition or subtraction. The student must learn this course by memorizing the priorities in an operation to avoid making the mistakes.
Exercise n° 1 : (8 pts)
Calculate the following expressions by detailing the steps.
A=7+3×10
|
C=33÷(2+9)
|
E=7×(12+2-5)
|
G=36÷4-2+6×3
|
B=2 × (54-4)
|
D=125-(10+3×5)
|
F=4×9-5×4
|
H=1-[12- (3+2×4)]
|
Exercise n° 2 : (3,5 pts)
Write the corresponding operations and then perform the calculations:
A : the quotient of 8 by 2 ;
B: the difference between 36 and 12 ;
C: the product of 100 by 5 ;
D : the sum of the product of 3 by 4 and 8 ;
E: the difference of 26 and the quotient of 24 by 4.
Exercise 3: (4 pts)
You have the expression: H=26-7×2-2 in which I forgot to write parentheses:
- Write H with the necessary brackets to obtain H=36.
- Write H with the necessary brackets to obtain H=14.
Exercise n° 4 : (4,5 pts)
Calculate the following expressions:
A = 35 + [12 + ( 75 – 55) – (15 – 8 ) ] + 7
B = 4 – (7 – 3 ) + [ 11 – ( 8 – 5)]
